Favorite Race: My favorite race is XTERRA Last Stand. It is an off road triathlon (swim, mountain bike, trail run) at Fort Custer State Recreation Area in Augusta, MI. This race was my first off road tri ever, and has been my first race of every season since I started racing XTERRA in 2008. Having a "home court" advantage on the trail has allowed me to hold the fastest mountain bike split several years running. The course is super fun and the race directors do a fantastic job. It is also great to see all of my XTERRA friends for the first time after a long winter.
Biggest AccomplishmentsIn 2012, I raced a long course off road triathlon in Ruston, Louisiana called XTERRA Epic Rustman. The race consisted of a 1 mile swim, a 31 mile mountain bike and a 10 mile trail run. At that time, there were only two races of this distance in the US and only a handful of women had attempted one. The preparation for such a race was challenging since it was much farther than any other race I had ever done. The temperature on race day was in the upper 80s, which brought about it's own challenges. Successfully completing the course in 5 hours and 41 minutes, nearly 20 minutes faster than my goal time, was definitely my most memorable accomplishment in off road tri.
AdviceHave fun and don't take it too seriously. In training, focus on your weaknesses. For example, if you dread the swim, swim, a lot. Use the resources offered by local races to find training advice and training groups.
If I'm Not Competing...I love going to races to cheer on my teammates and friends or volunteer at local races. I enjoy the break from the stresses of racing and like to celebrate the successes and accomplishments of others in the sport.
One Thing You Don't Know About Me:In college, I was an All-American heptathlete.
